Road Trippin’ Essentials
When we do a road
trip, we do it right. Our latest adventure involved a motor home and
trailer, both packed full of ATV goodies, including new gear,
electronics, security locks, and, of course, the coolest sport quads. We
told you all about the sport quads in the last issue (and we’re still
arguing about which is the best sand duner — Banshee, DS650, or
400EX). This time, we’ll give you the report on all the essential road
trip items, regardless of the make and model of your ATV. First, The
Wheels Trucks and trailers are awesome. Motor homes and trailers are
awesome-er.
This year for our annual Glamis extravaganza, we rented a motor home and
trailer combination. We searched the WWW for RV rentals in Southern
California, and found several options. We decided on
RV Central in Montclair, California. (phone 909-613-0562) rents a variety of motor homes, from the economical
22-foot Rialta to the luxurious 37-foot Winnebago.
We opted for the
26-foot “Class C” Jamboree, which runs on a Ford chassis and is
powered by a Ford Super Duty V-10. This hotel on wheels gave our
four-rider test group almost enough room. With a queen bed in back, a
“cab-over” bed up front, and a dining table that converts to a
sleeper, there is enough room for three adults in comfort. With all our
gear, food, and extra stuff, we had to do some creative packing, but it
all worked well. There was plenty of room for cooking, eating and
relaxing by day after changing the center bed back into a table. Besides, you don’t spend much time inside this unit in the daytime.
The Class C RVs usually have more sleeping room than the more luxurious
Class A homes. And the Class C units are less expensive to rent. Even if
there were hotels near the Glamis sand dunes, we’d pay much more to
rent a car and hotel rooms than we did to rent this RV and flat-bed
trailer. For any kind of camping outing (if you can call this
“camping”), an RV is often the most affordable, and certainly the
most convenient, option available.
If you live in Southern California, or can find some ATVs to rent,
